Juvéderm Q & A

What are dermal fillers?

As you age, your facial skin loses volume, wrinkles emerge, and laugh lines become apparent. Dermal fillers reduce these signs of aging, diminishing wrinkles and restoring fullness to your face. They can:

  • Plump thin lips
  • Enhance shallow contours
  • Soften or smooth facial creases and wrinkles (laugh lines)
  • Improve the appearance of scars
  • Reconstruct contour deformities in the face
  • Decrease the shadow of the lower lids

Dermal fillers function as temporary treatments for facial aging. Long-term results require continuous treatment.

Depending on your desired results, sometimes a facelift, brow lift, or eye lift are better options. Dr. Zand will work with you to choose the right course for your anti-aging treatment plan.

What is Juvederm®?

Juvederm is an injectable hyaluronic acid dermal filler used in facial rejuvenation. This product works to enhance your facial features, leaving you with long-lasting, natural results.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in your body and is the active ingredient in dermal fillers that makes the magic happen beneath your skin. Not only does it work to keep your skin full and elastic, but it also works as a moisturizer.

As an organic complex sugar that’s present in living cells, hyaluronic acid is an all-natural ingredient; the risk of an allergic reaction is extremely low. It’s also vegan-friendly since the acid is synthesized from bacteria.

How long does a dermal filler treatment take?

The actual treatment typically only takes about 10-20 minutes.

Dr. Zand will be happy to walk you through the treatment process and answer any questions you might have. Her priority is to help you age gracefully and maintain your skin’s youthful look without going under the knife.

How important is the injector you choose?

Extremely important! Injecting fillers is definitely an art as well as a science. Dr. Zand is an artist who will assess your current facial structure, look at past photos of you, evaluate your face from different angles and with different expressions, and enhance your volume to create a highly natural result. Our team frequently fixes other doctors’ work: overfilled cheeks that look “Maleficent,” overdone lips that appear unnatural and out of proportion with the face, visible lumps that need to be dissolved. You want a provider and an outcome you can trust. Choose an injector that is highly experienced, listens to your personal goals, and creates overall facial harmony - so natural that you simply look like your well-rested self from 5-10 years ago.

Botox vs Fillers

Botox and fillers are both types of cosmetic injections that combat signs of aging and can be utilized adjunctively and synergistically. Both our male and female patients benefit from a combination of botox and filler treatments. Botox is the brand name of a specific neuromodulator (NM) that relaxes muscles to help soften fine lines and wrinkles and lift certain areas of the face. Botox is especially effective against lines that are caused by dynamic facial expressions, such as lines on the forehead and crow’s feet by the eyes. We recommend starting botox when patient’s first begin to notice fine lines as early treatment helps to reduce the progression to deep-set wrinkles.

Dermal fillers are injectable fillers composed of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in our bodies (so no risk of allergy or toxicity) and serves to increase the volume and hydration through supporting and shaping the facial tissues. Fillers are used for restoring volume loss, and are especially effective for lines that are present even when the face is relaxed/at rest, such as marionette lines around the mouth. Dermal Fillers are effective for volume enhancement in the lips, mid face/cheek area, and can even help patients achieve a natural, non-surgical facelift.

Patients are recommended to come back for treatment every 3 months for botox and anywhere between 6-9 months for filler depending on the area treated. Botox and fillers can be done on the same day, and be sure to check out our pre procedure page to find useful tips in order to help minimize bruising and swelling before your treatment.
