Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing Q & A

How does fractional ablative laser resurfacing work?

  • Our top of the line laser uses SmartXide DOT technology to stimulate skin rejuvenation. Utilizing the technique of controlled injury, this laser triggers collagen production which tightens the skin. It treats small areas, vaporizing tiny columns of skin, while intentionally leaving areas of normal skin untouched. This reduces the risk of complications and speeds up healing time. As a result of the gentle ablation of the skin, new collagen is formed which leads to a reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, and improvement in color, texture, and tone caused by sun damage and acne scarring.

What is the Madonna Eye Lift?

  • The Madonna Lift is a non-surgical alternative to reducing the wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes. It dramatically tightens the upper and lower eyelids, giving your eyes a younger look. Also called a Fractional Eye Lift, this is accomplished by the use of our cutting edge fractional CO2 laser.

When will the first results be visible?

  • In the first few weeks following treatment, patients can expect to see significant improvement in freckling, sun spots, and hyperpigmentation. Over the next few months, there will be a noticeable tightening of fine lines and wrinkles due to increased collagen production. The full effect of the treatment will be seen in 6-12 months as collagen stimulation continues to tighten and lift the skin.

What results can I expect?

  • You can expect to see a dramatic improvement in pigmentation and pore size after 1 month. New collagen formation begins after 1-3 months, and maximal skin tightening will be visible 6 months after treatment. These beautiful results can last 2-3 years.

How does it work?

  • You can expect to be comfortable on the day of your treatment. Without pain reducers, resurfacing can be painful. But here at Zand Dermatology, we are very lucky to offer nitrous (or laughing gas at the dentist) to keep you comfortable thoughout your procedure. We numb topically for one hour prior, and can offer you valium and vicodin if you prefer. By the time you leave our office, you will have no discomfort. You will feel a little sleepy and want to go home and rest.

How long does it take?

  • You can expect to be with us for 3 hours on the day of your treatment. During the first hour, you will receive topical numbing ointment, take oral medications, and rest. Your treatment will take about an hour, after which we will apply ice and cool compresses to your face for 30-60 minutes. At this point, patients are pain-free and feel ready to go home. You will need a ride to and from our office.

What is the downtime?

  • Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing is an aggressive treatment that delivers dramatic results, and it takes at least one week of downtime. You can resume make-up and tinted sunscreen 1 week after treatment. Treated areas appear swollen and scabby for 5-10 days, after which the skin will look sunburn. Redness will gradually fade to pink in 2-3 weeks, and then back to normal 1 month post treatment. This is when you will see visible improvements in pigmentation and skin tightening.

How is fractional resurfacing different than other lasers?

  • The results from ablative fractional lasers are significantly more dramatic than with non-ablative lasers, which may have less downtime but also less tightening. Compared to older fully ablative CO2 laser technology, our fractional ablative laser eliminates negative side effects such as pain requiring anesthesia, prolonged scabbing and swelling, and risk of scarring.
