TMJ Q & A

What is TMJ dysfunction?

The temporo-mandibular joint, also known as TMJ, is located where the jaw bone meets the skull on each side of the face and serves as the hinge joint for the face. This joint can become displaced or overworked through grinding of the teeth causing headaches, tension, and jaw pain and tightness.

Why does TMJ happen?

There are many factors that contribute to TMJ. The major causes include teeth grinding and clenching, misalignment of teeth and jaw, injury to the teeth and jaw, poor posture, stress, arthritis, and gum chewing. In most causes the exact cause is not known.

How does Botox Treat TMJ?

Botox has long been used for treating medical issues, and is highly effective at alleviating TMJ. Botox is injected directly into the masseter, the main muscle that is responsible for chewing and opening/closing the mouth. Botox provides relief by reducing muscle strength and contraction which helps to relieve headaches, tension, and pain.

How long do botox results last when using Botox to treat TMJ?

Botox for TMJ is a simple, nonsurgical treatment that can be done in the office in a 15 minute appointment. Treated patients have found Botox for TMJ to be extremely effective and report a difference within the first 1-2 weeks of treatment. Results can last from 4-12 months.

What is the aesthetic outcome?

In addition to the medical benefits of Botox for TMJ, Botox can provide a wonderful cosmetic benefit for patients looking to refine and slim their face. Many patients also report the face appears more natural once previously overworked jaw muscles are relaxed.

Does it hurt?

We use the tiniest needles possible, so the treatment is mostly painless, similar to acupuncture. No anesthetic is required, and the procedure only takes a few minutes.

Testimonial from one of our patients:

"Iā€™m so happy, after receiving Botox injections for my TMJ, I am not waking up with jaw pain anymore! Just two weeks later and it's no longer clicking or stiff. I have smooth jaw motion while talking and eating. Jaw pain is no longer a part of my reality. Wow, thank you Zand Dermatology!ā€ ā€” E.M.
