Perimenopause & Menopause Skin Care

Your Skin Is Changing. Your Care Should Too.
Perimenopause and menopause can change your skin, hair and body—sometimes seemingly overnight. You may suddenly experience acne, dryness, sensitivity, hair thinning, facial hair, pigmentation, bruising or a loss of firmness in your face and neck.

You are not imagining it, and you do not simply have to accept it.

At Zand Dermatology, we offer thoughtful, personalized care for women navigating the hormonal transitions of midlife. We combine medical dermatology, cosmetic expertise and a whole-person approach to help you feel healthy, confident and at home in your skin.

How Hormonal Changes Affect Your Skin

During perimenopause, hormone levels begin to fluctuate—often years before your final menstrual period. As estrogen declines, the skin may produce less collagen, retain less moisture and become thinner, drier and more sensitive. Changes in the balance between estrogen and androgens may also contribute to acne, facial hair or thinning scalp hair.

Common concerns include:

  • New or worsening adult acne
  • Dry, itchy or sensitive skin
  • Redness and rosacea
  • Thinning hair or a widening part
  • Unwanted facial hair
  • Melasma and uneven pigmentation
  • Fine lines and loss of firmness
  • Neck laxity and more visible platysmal bands
  • Easy bruising or slower healing
  • Skin growths or changing moles
  • A Personalized Midlife Skin Plan

There is no single “menopause skin treatment.” Your care should reflect your skin, health, hormones, lifestyle and goals.

Your visit may include:

Medical Skin Care

We can diagnose and treat acne, rosacea, dryness, itching, rashes, hair loss and other skin concerns that may arise or change during midlife.

Prescription Skin Care

When appropriate, we may recommend prescription retinoids, acne medications, hair-loss treatments or other targeted therapies based on your individual needs.

Cosmetic Treatments

For patients interested in restoring firmness, brightness or facial balance, we may create a subtle, personalized plan using treatments such as:

  • Botox, Xeomin or Daxxify
  • Microneedling
  • BBL or V-Beam
  • COâ‚‚ laser resurfacing
  • Ultherapy
  • Thoughtfully placed filler
  • Medical-grade skin care

Our goal is never to make you look like someone else. It is to help you look rested, healthy, vibrant and unmistakably yourself

Whole-Person Guidance

Skin health does not exist in isolation. We may also discuss sleep, stress, nutrition, exercise, sun exposure and other factors that influence inflammation, aging and overall well-being.

If questions about hormone therapy arise, we can discuss how hormonal changes may be affecting your skin and coordinate with your gynecologist or primary care clinician. Hormone therapy is an individualized medical decision and is not prescribed solely as a cosmetic skin treatment.

Care Without Shame or Pressure

Midlife is not a problem to be fixed. It is a powerful transition—and you deserve care that recognizes both the medical and emotional sides of it.

We will listen to what has changed, explain your options honestly and help you decide what feels right for you. You may want a complete rejuvenation plan, treatment for one frustrating symptom or simply reassurance that what you are experiencing is normal.

There is no pressure and no one-size-fits-all formula.

A Note From Dr. Sarv Zand

“I understand how disorienting it can feel when your skin, hair or face begins changing faster than you expected. As both a dermatologist and a woman navigating this chapter myself, I want women to receive better information, more compassionate support and thoughtful solutions that still allow them to look like themselves. You deserve to feel beautiful, strong and fully alive at every age.”

— Sarv Zand, M.D.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does perimenopause begin?

Perimenopause commonly begins in the 40s, although it can start earlier. Skin and hair changes may occur before menstrual periods become obviously irregular.

Can menopause cause acne?

Yes. Hormonal fluctuations can contribute to acne along the chin, jawline, neck or other areas—even in women who did not experience significant acne as teenagers.

Why does my skin suddenly feel so dry?

Declining estrogen can affect the skin barrier, natural oil production and the skin’s ability to retain moisture. A gentler cleanser, richer moisturizer and carefully selected active ingredients can make a significant difference.

Can you help with menopausal hair loss?

Yes. Hair thinning has many possible causes, including hormonal changes, genetics, thyroid disease, nutritional deficiencies, stress and medications. Identifying the likely cause is the first step toward choosing an effective treatment.

Do I have to want cosmetic treatment?

Absolutely not. Visits may be entirely medical, entirely cosmetic or a combination of both. We will tailor the appointment to your concerns and preferences.

Feel Like Yourself Again

You do not need to chase youth. You deserve expert care that helps you move through this chapter feeling informed, supported and confident.
