Loose, crepey or less resilient skin on the abdomen is incredibly common. It may develop after pregnancy, weight loss, menopause or simply as collagen and elastin naturally decline with age. Even when the abdominal muscles are strong, the skin itself may no longer feel as firm or smooth as it once did.
Ultherapy is now FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of skin laxity on the abdomen. This noninvasive treatment stimulates your body's own collagen and elastin to gradually firm and tone the skin—without surgery, incisions or downtime.
Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound energy to reach collagen-rich layers beneath the surface of the skin. Real-time ultrasound visualization allows your provider to see the tissue being treated and deliver energy at precise depths, where it initiates the body's natural collagen-renewal process.
Unlike lasers, Ultherapy does not resurface or peel the skin. The surface remains intact while the deeper structural layers are treated. Over the following months, newly produced collagen and elastin can help the abdominal skin appear smoother, firmer and more resilient.
Ultherapy may be appropriate for:
Ultherapy tightens skin; it does not remove significant fat, repair separated abdominal muscles or eliminate large amounts of excess skin. Patients with substantial skin laxity may achieve a more dramatic result with surgery. During your consultation, we will give you an honest assessment of what Ultherapy can—and cannot—accomplish for your body.
Your treatment is customized to your anatomy and the degree of skin laxity present. Ultrasound gel is applied to the abdomen, and focused ultrasound energy is delivered beneath the skin while your provider monitors the tissue in real time.
Most patients need only one treatment. You may feel brief sensations of heat, tingling or intensity as the ultrasound energy is delivered. Because there are no incisions and the surface of the skin is not damaged, you can generally return to your normal activities immediately.
Ultherapy works by encouraging your body to create new collagen, so the results appear gradually rather than overnight. Some patients notice early firmness, with continued improvement over the following two to six months. Results on the abdomen may last six months or longer, depending on your age, skin quality and natural rate of collagen loss.
The best candidates have mild to moderate skin laxity and realistic expectations for a nonsurgical treatment. A personal consultation allows us to examine your skin, discuss your goals and determine whether Ultherapy—or another treatment approach—will give you the best result.
